现在，互联网上出现了一种名为crowdsourcing(群众外包，简称群包)的现象，让数以千万计网民无偿奉献。
最近社交网站Facebook公开招募义工，把网站译成20多种语言，以配合网站的迅速发展。这种集体翻译(collaborative translation)引起不少争议，专业翻译批评水平参差，曾为Wikipedia做义工翻译的则指Wikipedia是非牟利集团，而Facebook却是如假包换的商业机构，这样无异于利用网民做免费劳工。
Facebook则自辩说翻译费不贵，公司省不了多少钱，倒是网民对自己的作品特别有归属感，有利留客。
